Thursday June 14, Alain Hubert and Dixie Dansercoer pitched their tent along the northern coast of Greenland. Friday, the two men were able to rest a little and enjoy some of the extraordinary landscapes that these uninhabited regions offer. On Saturday June 16, meteorological conditions were particularly good both in Resolute Bay, where the Twin Otter was to take off from, and at the Arctic Arc campsite. After over 7 hours of flight, the plane landed on the marked out runway that Alain and Dixie had prepared.
After several months of solitude, they met up with their spouses and the film crew. On the way back, the Arctic Arc team stopped over in Thule, Greenland, to take care of some paper work. Wednesday June 20, in the late afternoon, Alain Hubert and Dixie Dansercoer were greeted at the Zaventem airport in Brussels by their families, their friends, their admirers and the press.

The sea floor under ice shelves is extremely difficult to access. The fauna that exists there can only do so by feeding on what currents carry under the ice. When an ice shelf vanishes, the phenomenon also allows the return of light, phytoplankton, zooplankton and finally of the sea floor animals feeding on the "plankton rain". However, the return of this rich and diversified fauna so typical of Antarctic bottoms is often also disturbed by the scouring of icebergs born from the ice shelf collapse.

However, this didn't prevent the big Polarstern family from enjoying it as much as possible. After the traditional dinner, we all gathered together in the "Blue saloon" for a Christmas glass, following the captain's speech. But there was more, a choir practising for more than a week offered to the assembly a suite of Christmas songs in 8 languages: German and English of course, the two languages the most used onboard Polarstern, but also in French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Danish and event Czech !
Only two days after fish stocks monitoring operations began near Elephant Island, we've already had a day to go down in the record books. Our first record was in term of whales: 13 whales were observed today, belonging to 3 different species. In detail, there were two Humpback Whales, famous for their huge "arms" and their spectacular leaps, as well as eight Fin Whales and three Sei Whales. Although less well-known, these last two are the two biggest species after their cousin the Blue Whale, each having a length of more than 20 m. The observations also neatly confirmed the expected richness of marine life near the edge of the continental shelf, where the sea bottom contours bring about an upwelling of nutrient-laden waters, necessary for strong plankton growth.

Is this already the ice shelf (floating ice platform, prolonging polar glaciers in the ocean) ? No, it's only one of the biggest tabular icebergs observed until now. But the ice shelf is further behind, on the horizon. This means that we are now sailing west along the coast to reach Atka Bay, where the Polarstern will unload fuel and containers for the Neumayer station, which lies some 10 km inland, or rather "inice".
