During the Antarctic summer, scientists either conduct research aboard a ship, or from a scientific research base such as the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica. To discover their work and the landscapes and fauna of Antarctica, we will publish a short video every week, sometimes with new quizzes.

These videos have been shooted by marine biologist Dr. Gauthier Chapelle, the International Polar Foundation’s former scientific officer, during the Polarstern’s 2006-2007 expedition to Antarctica. The Polarstern is the flasgship research vessel of the German Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI).

In total, 47 scientists took part in the expedition to conduct 25 research projects in several scientific disciplines. They studied topics that were important at the time including fisheries management as well as the melting of the ice caps as a consequence of climate change and its influence on the fauna.
