Teaching dossiers & Activities

Various teaching dossiers have been put together by the International Polar Foundation. These dossiers aim to help teachers introduce subjects such as the Polar Regions, climate and climate change, energy and biodiversity to their students. The dossiers are mainly intended for late primary school (or middle school) teachers (10-12 years old students) and secondary school science and geography teachers.

  • Fishing in the Arctic and Antarctic: Exploiting Living Resources

Fishing in the Arctic and Antarctic: Exploiting Living Resources

    19.11.2010

This fact sheet looks at how global consumption of living marine resources has more than doubled over the last 50 years, thanks to modern fishing techniques. These techniques have been so successful that overfishing now poses a serious threat to world fish stocks.…

  • The new economic stakes of climate change

The new economic stakes of climate change

    05.11.2010

This fact sheet describes how - thanks to the melting of the polar ice - the tourism and shipping industries will be able to expand their activities to formerly inaccessible areas. This development, however, represents potential dangers for the fragile polar ecosystems.

  • Persistent Pollutants in the Polar Regions

Persistent Pollutants in the Polar Regions

    29.10.2010

This fact sheet explains how the Polar Regions have been contaminated by pollution emitted in the industrialized countries. Many pollutants have been transported to the Arctic by atmospheric or water currents. This pollution poses a threat to many polar species.

  • Exploitation of Mineral Resources in the Polar Regions

Exploitation of Mineral Resources in the Polar Regions

    15.10.2010

This fact sheet looks at the riches below the ground many countries are interested in getting their hands on. Experts estimate that the Polar Regions hold a lot of minerals, natural gas and oil, and the melting of the ice will make these resources…

  • The Geopolitical Status of the Arctic and Antarctic

The Geopolitical Status of the Arctic and Antarctic

    01.10.2010

This fact sheet explores the geopolitical status of both Polar Regions. At the moment, Antarctica is protected from any form of economic exploitation under the Antarctic Treaty; however this is not the case for the Arctic. The Arctic is seeing increased economic and…

  • Paleoclimatic Exploration in the Arctic & Antarctic

Paleoclimatic Exploration in the Arctic & Antarctic

    17.09.2010

This fact sheet concerns the ice cores extracted from the poles, which are the archives of our planet’s climate past. These archives have confirmed the narrow link between the evolution of temperatures and the concentration of the main greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

  • Energy: 13 In-Class Activities

    Energy: 13 In-Class Activities

    21.06.2010

This document brings together 13 activities designed for students between 8 and 15 years old, with each focusing on a different energy-related topic. A short theoretical explanation accompanies each activity. The themes covered include: What Is Energy? The Sun, World's Driving…

  • Princess Elisabeth Station Antarctica (CZE6)

    Princess Elisabeth Station Antarctica (CZE6)

    08.05.2009

This dossier includes a theory section explaining the interior and exterior design of the station as well as many of its technical aspects (renewable energy production, passive heating, waste management, etc.). Three ready-to-use activity sheets are also included: Activity: game…

  • Sustainable Development: What Is It? (CZE5)

Sustainable Development: What Is It? (CZE5)

    07.05.2009

This dossier includes a theory section which concerns sustainable development (its origins, its basic principles), our ecological footprint and society's impact on the environment. (Note: this section is a bit more advanced due to the material.) Three ready-to-use students' activity…
